One of my favorite things to do for the holidays is to decorate with homemade decorations. Each year, I like to add one item for each holiday so as not to overwhelm myself nor have my items look too similar to each other. I find it very therapeutic to work with my hands and get creative with textures and new pieces. It’s so representative of the point that I’m at in life. Creating a theme for each decoration helps me to bring all of these elements together.
For this fall wreath, my theme is The First Thanksgiving. I went to Michaels to collect the decorations for it, but any craft store will do. And remember, in the words of one of my favorite clients, “More is more and less is a bore.”
The best way to get started is to lay out some newspaper. Take the items that you’ve chosen and put them around the base of the wreath. Here, we have fall colored berries, small pumpkin patches, dried corn, and feathers.
Around the edges of the wreath stick in the berries to make the wreath appear fuller. Once the berries are in, take a glue gun and secure the items in place. Next up is the burlap ribbon. Bunch it up and tuck it along the edges. Usually, when ribbons are used, people wrap them around the wreath tightly, but this just makes the wreath appear smaller.
Once the wreath begins to take shape, keep tweaking and adding small pieces, while gluing everything in its place.
To complete this look, I used the burlap ribbon to make a large bow. And there you go. You’re ready for fall!
