Tips on How Stay Politically Aware

Recently, I received a text message asking my opinion on a perspective Presidential candidate. While flattered that anyone would want my opinion, after all I’m usually at home with small children these days, I was also a bit embarrassed. My political knowledge has come down to a mixture of John Stewart sketches and common sense. This made me realize how behind I’d gotten. First, with John Stewart leaving the Daily Show, he can no longer be my go-to source on politics. But secondly, I used to be that woman in the know when it came to politics at the local, state, and federal level. Now, I’ve been reduced to short segments on Comedy Central.

In some ways, having kids should make me more vested in the political landscape of our future. But truth be told, I find so many things depressing—morons get elected to office, smart elected officials can’t figure out how to get along with others and compromise, and often the loudest voice wins. All of these may be good excuses, but it’s time once again to study up, make informed decisions, and get involved!

Which brings me to today: What are the best ways for multitasking women to stay abreast on politics today?

Reconsider the Source

Personally, I think it’s always a good idea to get news from a variety of sources, each with a different political bend. It’s easier to see the other side of the issue at arm’s length.

My family and I get the Arizona Republic and the New York Times (NYT). Subscribing to the Sunday edition, which recaps the prior week, is also a viable option for those with a busy week. Remember to use the accompanying apps for those subscribing online. Also, weekly or monthly news magazine like Newsweek or Time, can often offer a different perspective.

Discuss Current Affairs

I hardly ever have time to read both papers cover to cover, but I do try to make it a point to read a bit further, so that my husband and I can discuss some of the stories. This always helps me to flush out current affairs and solidify my opinions.

Set Time Aside for Research

The World Wide Web might be overwhelming at times, but it’s truly a wonderful source for information. Here are two helpful links from top-rated political blogs and websites.

Now, it’s your turn. How do you like to stay politically aware?
