Wellness Wednesday: COURAGE

As a new mom, I’ve had to let go of so much. Just the other evening, I sat covered in vomit at the movies when my daughter had a tad bit too much to eat and relieved herself all over Momma. I whipped out the package of baby wipes and went to town on the both of us. Twenty minutes shy of the credits, we left—me in a crusty pair of Lululemons and Darlington, naked and happy.  Sometimes “letting go” feels like a sacrifice, but after a bit of reflection, I remembered that there are things bigger and more important than me and my self-consciousness—a lesson I’m continually faced with as a mother.

Wellness Wednesday: COURAGE

I want to tell you about one of the most terrifying moments I’ve ever lived through. It was my freshman year in high school, and my competitive cheerleading squad was about to participate in our very first competition. We were standing behind a huge white screen so that everyone in the crowd could see our silhouettes behind it. The music blasted through huge speakers. The announcer’s voice roared in my ears. Our coach had instructed us to jump up and down and make huge movements so they’d be noticeable behind the screen. It was all I could do to stand up, my legs shook so badly, much less jump up and down and wave my arms in the air. I looked over at my friend, Holly, and we both let out screams of sheer terror.

Wellness Wednesday: COURAGE

I strive to live my life in chapters because there’s a sense of growth and momentum toward the future, giving permission to the different periods of my life so that they may have a beginning and an end. Not every chapter is as perfect, or as profound, or as difficult as the chapter before or after, but they transition into each other, and hopefully, like any chapters in a good book, they just keep getting better.

As most of you know because you took this journey with me, in this recent chapter of my life I was there when my friend got the news she had terminal cancer. I was there when she wanted to fight for her life. I was there through her final days. And in the end, I was there to celebrate her life with everyone who loved her—the only way we all knew how—with tons of laughter, tears, music, stories, and some good ole Texas fun.

I’m forever changed by this experience, seeing my friend in ways I’d never seen her before. She couldn’t have been more beautiful. Most people would’ve given up when everyone, including a team of experts, had given up on them. But her dignity, integrity, and grace grew from her courage, and I’m renewed because of it.

Wellness Wednesday: COURAGE

This week, to introduce our new word of the month, Courtney shares the meaning of courage.

I have my own definition of courage, which I want to share with you. But before I put words around what courage means to me, I thought about all the women in my life who exhibit this quality on a daily basis. There are many strong, fearless women who surround me. They approach every day, every obstacle, every challenge with a deep sense of bravery and resolve. Yet, as most sources would say, having courage doesn’t mean you don’t have fear. It simply means you ignore the fear and do the damn thing anyway.

So before I get to my own personal definition, let’s hear from some incredible women what courage means to them. I’ve included their name, their relationship to me, and why I think they’re courageous.
